Upstate firefighters are being remembered after a tragic accident in the line of duty

CLINTON, SC (FOX Carolina) – A firefighter died and another was injured after a multi-vehicle crash, including a fire truck, on Sunday, the Laurens County coroner said.

According to the coroner, the accident occurred near Interstate 72, at Springdale Drive and Williard Road, in Clinton.

The firefighters were part of the Clinton Fire Department and were on board the fire truck during the incident, the coroner said. They have identified the slain firefighter as 27-year-old Michael Vinson of Laurens.

Another firefighter was taken to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for treatment and was released Monday.

According to the Highway Patrol, the fire truck was traveling east on Williard Road when it collided with a 2006 Lexus that was traveling north on Springdale Road. The driver of the Lexus was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The City of Clinton issued the following statement:

“With a heavy heart, the City of Clinton, South Carolina regrets to announce that one of its firefighters, Michael “Mike Mike” Vinson, has died in the line of duty. City of Clinton Fire Department Engine 1202 was responding to a call for service at approximately 11 a.m. today when it was involved in a motor vehicle accident. The occupant of the other vehicle was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. A second Clinton firefighter who was aboard the truck was transported to Spartanburg Regional Hospital for treatment. The SC Highway Patrol MAIT Team is currently investigating the crash.

Community members and first responders gathered outside Clinton City Hall on North Broad Street for a prayer vigil Monday.

On Monday, a memorial was created outside the Laurens County Fire Department with Vinson’s uniform.

“He was loved by everyone,” said Marshal Clinton Donia Langston. “He’s very soft spoken but he’s a great person and a great firefighter, and he’ll be greatly missed.”

A procession will be held Tuesday to bring Vinson home to Laurens County from Prisma Health’s Greenville Memorial Hospital, officials said.

A service for Vinson will be held at Union Baptist Church in Laurens at 2 p.m. Friday.
