An elderly pedestrian was killed by a hit-and-run driver on Thursday morning, just hours after a motorcyclist died in one of a series of horrific crashes across Queensland overnight.

The man in his 70s was struck by a mystery car at Kittyhawk Drive and Murphy Road in Chermside, Brisbane, at about 5.15am.

Paramedics found him in a critical condition with head, pelvis and leg injuries, and he was taken to Royal Brisbane Hospital in a critical condition, but he later died.

A police spokesman said that the police are continuing to search for the vehicle in question and investigations are still ongoing

Just two hours ago, a motorcyclist is believed to have died after a 3.20am collision near Hendra in Brisbane on the off-ramp to Southern Cross Road.

Ambulance workers found the motorcyclist in critical condition, but he later reportedly died.

The main road into the city center was closed following the accident but has since reopened with reduced lanes.

The 29-year-old driver of a Toyota SUV was also airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after an overnight collision with a 4×4 jeep on the Bruce Highway near Cowra, north of the Sunshine Coast.

The driver of the jeep, a 28-year-old Molambene man, sustained minor injuries and was taken to Gympie Hospital.

In a fourth incident, a woman was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition after two cars collided near Yarman, northwest of Brisbane, overnight.

Preliminary investigations indicate that an SUV was westbound on D’Anguilar Highway at approximately 8 p.m. when it collided with a truck traveling in the opposite direction.

The driver of the SUV was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital in a serious condition.

A female passenger sustained only minor injuries, and the truck driver was not physically injured.
