Three Thoroughbreds die in a trailer crash in Kentucky

Three Thoroughbred horses died March 25 after the trailer carrying them crashed in Nelson County, Kentucky, early in the morning.

According to Facebook posts from the Bardstown police and fire departments, the crash occurred around 4:49 a.m. near Exit 25 of Bluegrass Parkway. The trailer was traveling eastbound toward Lexington when it crossed the median and westbound lanes, striking the bridge embankment. The horses were traveling to Keeneland From Arkansas.

The driver, who suffered a severe laceration to his foot and two apparent lacerations to his head, was taken to Flagett Memorial Hospital by ambulance before being airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital. His injuries are not life-threatening. Based on the visual branding, the truck is part of the Creech Horse Transportation fleet.

Anderson County Large Animal Rescue assisted in removing the thoroughbreds, and veterinarians from Rood & Riddle and Hagyard were on scene. Removing the horses took approximately four hours. While three horses died, four other horses were recovered and transported by ambulance to the Horse Hospital.

Kelly Wheeler, assistant trainer to Eddie Keneally, commented on the fire department’s post, saying the horses were in their care.

“I can’t thank everyone enough for doing what they could to save the horses,” Wheeler said in her post. “Losing three of them is an incredible tragedy. But because of everyone’s hard work, there are four in the equine hospital and hopefully on their way to recovery.”

One of the horses that died was Darkroom, a 3-year-old tempts The gelding who won the allowance race on March 15 at Fairlands Racing Course and Slots. This was his second win in four appearances. His death was confirmed on Twitter by Double O Racing, which owns the Kentucky Dynasty in partnership with Kenneally, Kim Valerio and Martha Ingram.

Calls made by BloodHorse to the Kentucky Highway Patrol and Creech Horse Transportation were not immediately returned.
