The cause of death of former NFL wide receiver Mike Williams has been revealed.

Williams, 36, died in September after an accident at a construction site left him partially paralyzed and placed on a ventilator. The former Tampa Bay Buccaneer has been hospitalized in the intensive care unit in Tampa Bay, Florida, following a construction site accident on August 21.

Williams died of a rare bacterial sepsis, according to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner’s Office in Florida, ESPN reported Thursday.

The medical examiner’s office said in its report that Williams’ cause of death was due to “bacterial sepsis with brain abscesses and necrotizing lobar pneumonia due to multiple tooth decay and retained tooth roots,” according to the outlet.

Hardening of the arteries and blood vessels was also listed as a contributing factor in the former NFL player’s death, ESPN reported.
