One dead and one injured in pedestrian accidents near Bills Stadium

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — A Buffalo man is in custody and faces a felony charge for leaving the scene of a fatal car accident outside a Buffalo Bills game Monday night.

Khairullah Hussain, 32, was arraigned in Orchard Park City Court on Tuesday morning. He’s accused of hitting a 65-year-old Rochester man with his car on Southwest Street near Stadium Drive at 8:19 Monday night, just as a Bills game was starting.

The accused allegedly left the scene. Police found him three hours later when they arrested him at his home in Buffalo.

The Rochester man was transported to ECMC, where he passed away.

When seeking bail, Hussain’s appointed lawyer said he may not have realized he had hit something, partly because it was so dark around the stadium at the time.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man lying in the street. Witnesses told police that the car left the scene, heading east on Southwest Street.

A witness was able to obtain the license plate number and description of the car as it fled the scene, according to investigators.

Southwestern Blvd. The road was closed between Abbott Road and California Road for more than two hours while police reconstructed the crash for their investigation.

The defendant needed a Burmese translator to summon him. During the proceedings, he was identified as a husband and father of four young children, as well as a full-time teacher at the Islamic School on Best Street in Buffalo. He is also a part-time delivery driver for Amazon.

District Attorney John Flynn later said Hussain was on the delivery route with one of his children in the car at the time of the accident.

Hussein is a US citizen who has lived in the country since 2007. He commutes back and forth between Buffalo and Indiana, where his car is registered.

Hussein’s license and driving privileges were suspended. He will return to court for a criminal hearing on Friday, November 17.

Shortly after this incident, around 10 p.m., another victim was struck by a vehicle at the intersection of Abbott Road and Milestrip Road. The victim, a 36-year-old man, was transported to ECMC by ambulance. The vehicle involved in the accident remained at the scene and the driver cooperated with the police. Investigators say the pedestrian crossed the street against the pedestrian sign and entered the path of a vehicle that had the right of way.
