More than a dozen people were injured when two tour boats crashed near the Fisherman’s Canal in Miami-Dade Sunday afternoon, officials said.

More than 30 Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units along with City of Miami Fire officers, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to reports of a boat collision near Port Miami around 3:15 p.m.

At least 13 people were transported to a nearby hospital, according to Miami-Dade Fire Rescue. At least one had to be airlifted.

US Coast Guard officials said the collision occurred between The Obelix and The Thriller, both charter boats.

Thriller’s boat was seen suffering damage after colliding with another boat near PortMiami on February 11, 2024.

“We usually don’t have accidents, but yes, the tour boats always go through fishermen’s lanes and government strips,” said Horacio Rodriguez, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief.

Some patients were evaluated and released from the scene, Rodriguez said.

“There were other people inside the boat, it was a tour boat involved, from Bayside. Patients who had no complaints were taken to Bayside,” Rodriguez said.

Rabbi Yossi Harlig, of the Chabad center in Kendall and Pinecrest, said his sister and brother-in-law were on one of the boats with her four children.

“My sister broke some bones, and her husband broke some ribs, and they are in a lot of pain because of what happened and are worried about the children,” Harlig said. “But they also feel grateful to God that they were on the left side of the boat, where the boat arrived, and the kids were on the right side of the boat, and they’re grateful that the kids weren’t on their side of the boat by the boat.”

Harlig said family members were in town to celebrate his son’s birthday.

He said: “My sister said she turned around at the last second and saw the boat hit directly into her. What happened, they’re not even sure for themselves.” “It was very painful for them. No child should have to witness such an incident. Seeing their parents on the ground, seeing other people bleeding, it was very painful for them.”

What led to the accident is unknown but is being investigated by the Coast Guard and FWC.

Coast Guard officials said the Obelix was operating as an illegal charter vessel and a “port captain’s order” had been issued, meaning they were unable to sail because they were under investigation.

The owner of Obelix told NBC6 that no one on his boat was hurt, but he did not want to comment further.

The Thriller has been issued with ship inspection requirements that must be carried out before it can operate again, officials said.
