Jeremy Renner Snowplow accident timeline

Actor Jeremy Renner kicked off 2023 with a snowplow accident that crushed his body on New Year’s Day, leaving him in critical condition with more than 30 broken bones.

The “Avengers” star, who plays Hawkeye in the Marvel superhero films, spent the next months recovering, undergoing extensive physical therapy and learning to walk again.

Renner, 52, ended the painful year by sharing an update on his condition and thanking his fans.

“I’ve been exploring all types of therapy” since January, he wrote on Instagram on November 7, 2023.

“But my greatest healing has been my mind and my will to be here and push to recover and get better…. Be exceptional… I feel it is my duty to do that. Not to waste my life to save it, but to give back to my family and friends, and to all of you who have enabled me to endure. I Thank you all.”

Below is the timeline of his accident and recovery:

How did Jeremy Renner’s accident happen?

On Jan. 1, 2023, Renner was using a snowplow to pull his nephew’s truck out of the snow on his property in Reno, Nevada, on a private road, according to an incident report from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office obtained by NBC News.

The snowplow — a Pistenbully that weighs at least 7 tons and runs on a track — began sliding down the hill, so Renner got out but without applying the emergency brake, the report says.

The Sheriff’s Office noted that when he attempted to walk on the track, the actor was pulled under the Bestanbouli track and the track overturned on top of him, causing injuries to his torso, limbs, face and head.

The actor said he suffered more than 30 broken bones and was taken to hospital in critical condition. His spokesman added that he suffered severe chest trauma and bone injuries.

In April 2023, Renner offered more details about what happened in an interview with Diane Sawyer. The actor said he was leaning out the door of a snowplow to see where his nephew was, fell and tried to climb back in and fell under the path of the snowplow.

“I happened to be the dummy standing on the dang track for a little bit, to see if my nephew was there,” Renner told Sawyer. “You have to be in the car when you start it, you know what I mean? It’s like driving a car with your foot out of the car…and it’s my fault, and I paid for it.”

The area was recently hit by a snow storm, so it took 40 minutes for emergency responders to reach Renner. Neighbors came out with towels and provided assistance until he was airlifted to the hospital, officials said.

Jeremy Renner’s recovery

The actor underwent surgery on January 2 and spent some time in the intensive care unit, his spokesperson said.

Renner’s rib cage had to be reconstructed with metal, and metal plates were used to reconstruct his eye socket, according to an interview with Diane Sawyer. The actor told her that rubber bands and screws had been added to his jaw, and a titanium rod and screws had been placed in his leg.

Renner returned home from the hospital on January 16, 2023, and shared regular updates about his recovery on social media.

In February 2023, he posted a video of himself riding a stationary bike.

In March 2023, he shared a video showing him walking on a treadmill, the first time fans had seen Renner on his feet since the accident.

In April 2023, the actor walked leaning on a cane when he appeared at the Los Angeles premiere of his Disney+ documentary series “Rennervations.” Once in the event, Renner used a knee scooter.

In May 2023, Renner showed off his fitness routine and described his body as a “miracle” – “even though I feel like a tin man, and need oil for all my new joints (hips, knees, ankles, calves, etc.).”

Since then, he has shared photos of himself looking healthy and optimistic, urging fans to find time to share time with the people they love.

Jeremy Renner’s current health condition

In his last Instagram post dated November 7, 2023, Renner wrote that he has now spent “countless hours” of physical therapy. He added that other interventions he tried as part of his recovery include peptide injections, red light therapy and hyperbaric chamber therapy.

Therapeutic peptides could act as hormones, growth factors, neurotransmitters or anti-infective agents, researchers say. Red light therapy is an emerging treatment being promoted for improving wound healing, although more studies are needed according to the Cleveland Clinic.

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves entering a special chamber to inhale pure oxygen in an attempt to repair tissue, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine.

Renner says he plans to continue working as an actor when he gets stronger.

“I’m not going anywhere,” he said at a fan event in Phoenix, Arizona, in June 2023.

“If Marvel wanted to bring me back into the MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) and beat that, I would do it in a heartbeat. I love these guys.
