H4M MATCHMAKING releases new data on AI and online dating for the LGBTQ+ community

The survey shows that LGBTQ+ singles are finding it difficult to make real connections due to the increased use of artificial intelligence

Daytona Beach, Florida, November 7, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — With cuffing season right around the corner, a certified matchmaker Tammy Shackley And her team at H4M Matchmaking It has released new data exploring the LGBTQ+ community’s feelings about online dating, the use of artificial intelligence (AI), and other individual challenges. After a decade of interviewing thousands of members of the LGBTQ+ community and with the rise of artificial intelligence, H4M saw the need to explore the role of artificial intelligence in the world of dating and whether this new technology helps or harms singles. The survey, which collected responses from a diverse group of participants from the LGBTQ+ community, (ages 20-70) found that nearly 44% of LGBTQ+ singles are somewhat or very interested in the role of AI in dating.

Key findings include:

  • 45% of participants reported that they had already been scammed by an AI or chatbot while using online dating platforms.
  • 58% of LGBTQ+ singles report that it is harder to find a meaningful connection with someone through dating apps or websites than offline methods.
  • 57% of members of the LGBTQ+ community reported that dating apps or sites made dating more stressful.

“The modern dating landscape prioritizes efficiency and accessibility over real connections,” said H4M Matchmaking founder and president. Tammy Shackley. “At H4M, we wanted to find out how singles really feel about modern dating tools and, in turn, how they can improve their experience.”

Regarding AI involvement in dating for the LGBTQ+ community, the survey revealed diverse opinions. Nearly 58% of participants in the LGBTQ+ community expressed a neutral or positive position on the ethics of AI, while 42% of participants believe that AI is somewhat or largely unethical. These statistics are slightly higher than the 45% of all Americans who feel neutral about the impact of AI on their daily lives (El Nadeem, 2022).

Interestingly, 75% of H4M respondents reported that they did not use AI features in dating apps, while 25% described AI features in general as somewhat or often deceptive. Furthermore, when asked about their interactions with AI, 75% of H4M LGBTQ+ participants reported that they had not used AI to assist their side of the conversation. In contrast, 25% reported that approximately 25% or more of their side of conversations related to AI, a stark contrast to a statistic from cybersecurity and digital privacy company Kaspersky, which found that 75% of all dating app users are willing to use AI as ChatGPT, while using online dating platforms (Kaspersky, 2023). The significant difference between LGBTQ+ users and general online dating users shows the hesitation of the gay community towards using AI in their dating lives.

“Unfortunately, a large number of respondents (29%) reported instances of being scammed by AI or chatbots while using dating apps,” Shackley says. “However, it should be noted that 71% of participants were not sure or had not encountered such deception, highlighting the need for continued efforts to enhance user safety and security in online dating environments.”

When asked about their willingness to use AI if it could improve their chances of getting an in-person date, 49% of participants answered in the affirmative, indicating a potential acceptance of the role of AI in the dating process. At the same time, 29% indicated the possibility of considering artificial intelligence, while 22% expressed a clear reluctance to rely on artificial intelligence for this purpose. This contrasts with the same Kaspersky study where 37% of participants said they would be open to using the tool to improve their profiles (Kaspersky, 2023). Despite an unwillingness to rely on AI in online dating conversations, participants in the LGBTQ+ community were more willing to use other forms of AI if it could improve their chances of meeting face-to-face.

Surprisingly, 45% of participants reported instances where they were cheated by AI or were cheated on while using dating apps. This finding underscores the need for platforms and service providers to prioritize user safety and implement robust measures to detect and prevent deceptive practices. These results were only slightly higher than the 41% of all US adults who reported online being victims of catfishing (Sirisha, 2023). This indicates that the issue is not limited to a specific group, but rather has broader implications for the general population. This serves as a reminder to online dating users to be aware of the potential risks of scams and either take steps to protect themselves or seek alternative methods of dating.
