George Gilbey’s mother, Linda, breaks her silence about his tragic death and says he was ‘trying to rebuild his life’ before the work accident.

The heartbroken mother of Gogglebox star George Gilbey has told how her son was “trying to rebuild his life” when he tragically fell to his death through a warehouse roof last week.

Linda McGarry, 74, said George was her “best friend” and “did more in 40 years than most people do in 90.”

His ex-partner, Gemma Conway, 44, the mother of their daughter Amelie, seven, described him for the first time after his death, as a “devoted father”.

In a touching interview with the Thurrock Gazette, Linda praised her son – who starred with her in Channel 4 show Gogglebox – as a “devoted father” with a “big personality”.

George, 40, of Point Clare, St Osyth, died last Wednesday after falling more than 80ft at work in Shawbury, while on the roof of a building.

Gilby has become a household name on Gogglebox alongside mother Linda and stepfather Pete

He is best known for appearing on Channel 4’s Gogglebox alongside his mother Linda McGarry and her husband Pete, who died aged 71 after suffering from bowel cancer in 2021.

George, a qualified electrician and roofer, had only been back at work for three days and was trying to “rebuild his life”, his mother said.

“I’m devastated, he was like my best friend,” Linda said.

“He had the best heart in the world – he was generous, funny, kind, with a lot of charm and a lot of personality.”

He did more at 40 than people do at 90 – he even had dinner with the Prince of Dubai.

“He was crazy, but after leaving the entertainment industry, he couldn’t get his life back.

“He couldn’t get over Pete’s death.”

“I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and it was worse for me. He was a mummy’s boy.

“He became famous overnight but he didn’t want to be – he was just normal.

“But it allowed him to do philanthropy — any time anyone approached him about philanthropy, he made it a priority.”
