Canva – Review 2023 – PCMag Middle East

Canva’s quest has always been to simplify the chaotic graphic ecosystem. It enables anyone – regardless of artistic talent or skill with graphic design software – to create visual content with easy drag-and-drop features that work on any device from anywhere in the world. It also enables small businesses to produce and edit professional-looking social media photos and videos, slide decks, animated Instagram posts, Facebook ads, and other branded assets. Furthermore, large organizations can use the tool to give their internal communications departments structured oversight of all employee-created content to keep it on-brand. The app has a wealth of templates, a robust image library, free workshops to learn best practices, and new AI-powered Magic Studio tools that make it better than ever. All of this earns Canva our Editors’ Choice award for graphic design software.

How much does Canva cost?

Canva has three pricing tiers: Canva Free, Canva Pro ($14.99 per month or $119.99 per year for one person), and Canva for Teams ($29.99 per month or $300 per year for the first five people). Canva is 100% free for approved and registered schools, teachers, and non-profit organizations. All paid tiers include a 16% savings on annual bills on a month-over-month basis. Additionally, there is a Canva Enterprise tier for very large organizations with custom integration needs (contact the company for a quote).

Free account holders get more than 250,000 free templates, 100 design formats, 1 million free images and graphics — including Smartmockups, which overlay your design on products like T-shirts and mobile screens — more than 1,000 fonts, and a subset of AI-powered tools, Including Magic Write, Magic Design, Manual Beat Sync and Magic Edit. Although the free plan now offers unlimited folders, there is a 5GB cap on data storage, and you’ll miss out on the Pro features mentioned below, including exporting files to CMYK.

A Pro account includes more magic – more AI-driven tools, 1TB of cloud storage, 60,000 templates, up to 100 brand sets (to save custom combinations of logos, colors, and fonts to ensure brand consistency), and Magic Switch (which lets you resize designs, an improvement over previous Canva Embeds), and a social content planner that can publish directly to eight social media platforms. With Pro, you get access to more graphics, fonts, videos, animations, audio, and photos (over 100,000,000), the ability to upload your own fonts, and the remaining set of design and AI tools – Magic Eraser, Magic Write, Magic Grab, Automatic Beat Sync tools AI management and more.

All plans allow you to export designs as PDF, JPG, and PNG files, but Pro now lets you export print-ready CMYK files as well, which is essential if you print your design outside of the Canva ecosystem. Also added at this level is 24/7 customer support. You can get a free 30-day trial of the Pro plan, but that requires you to provide payment information up front.

A Teams account includes everything in Pro, plus additional centralized features for brand extension (3,000 brand sets, brand templates, brand controls, and logo builder), one-click background removal in photos and video, and controls to restrict access to Who can edit templates and manage brand assets.

Canva for Enterprise adds scalable branding, custom enterprise-grade security, and real-time team collaboration. Enterprise accounts also get management and security features, such as single sign-on support.

Note that, as with other AI apps like ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Midjourney, each account type in Canva has usage limits for most AI-powered tools.

How do Canva’s prices compare to the competition?

Canva’s prices are the same as its competitors, although it depends on the level of service you need. Adobe Express, a similar web app from Adobe, costs less, and with the recent addition of Adobe FireFly, has become more like Canva’s Magic Studio (more on this below). The free Adobe Express plan comes with 2GB of storage and access to a subset of templates, images, and fonts. Express Premium costs $9.99 per month or $99.99 per year, although it’s included at no additional cost if you already have an Adobe Creative Cloud subscription ($84.99 per month or $599.88 per year for a huge suite of content creation apps). 100GB of storage is added to the paid plan along with full Adobe assets, capabilities, and premium tools.

As of this writing, Canva’s toolkit is more robust than Adobe Express’s in terms of its variety and usefulness of templates and proprietary components. For example, Canva has 21 AI apps (plus access to third-party apps and plugins), live mind maps, complex data visualizations, and a scrollable website builder that’s less restrictive than the previous Spark Page now included in Express.

Microsoft Designer, the first major web app to venture into text-to-image AI, is one contender — at least before Canva’s massive October 2023 AI launch. If you have a subscription to any of the Microsoft Office products, you have access to Designer, but since it’s still in preview, it’s free to use on the web as long as you sign in with a Microsoft account — for now.

Prezi is not a direct competitor to Canva, but it is similar in that it helps people of any skill level create compelling visual business materials, mostly speaking videos and presentations. Prezi has approximately ten different levels of service, ranging from $36 to $708 per year. If you are purchasing a license just for yourself and not for an entire team, you can expect to pay between $3-$7 per month. Although Prezi is an Editors’ Choice award winner for its innovative presentation-building capabilities, it doesn’t include social media post scheduling or design tools for creating marketing and advertising content, as Canva does.

The new AI magic in Canva

To mark Canva’s 10th anniversary, the Australian company has brought back Magic Studio, the world’s first integrated AI-powered design platform for everyone and every business.

The launch of Magic Studio reinforces Canva’s quest to democratize design. According to Canva, Magic Studio is now the world’s most comprehensive AI-powered design platform to help individuals, teams, and organizations boost their creativity, increase their productivity, and scale their brands.

Let me first list and explain the features of Magic Studio, and then, I’ll show you some photos I’ve taken using it.

Magic switch

Magic Switch is an industry-first feature that converts designs into a range of formats with one click, so you can turn your presentation into an executive summary or create a blog post from a dashboard containing ideas. This feature can also translate your text into different languages while you’re at it.

Magic media

Magic Media is the text to image and text to video conversion function in the app. It turns text into attractive images, and with this latest update, lets you explore a wide range of new style options for any result. You can also create engaging videos from an image or text with Gen-2, a video generation AI model powered by a New York company called Runway.

Canva has equipped its Magic Write copywriting assistant with an ear for your brand’s voice. All you have to do to ensure consistent tone in your designs or documents is add tone guidelines to your branding kit, and you’ll create on-brand content every time.

Magic Morph

From poster to Instagram post.

I’ve been testing out some of Canva’s new features. For example, I used Magic Switch to reformat my large Tirade Glasses poster into an Instagram post, and it worked well.

However, when I tried to add red sunglasses to the boxer to tie into my logo, I received error message after error, even when I used one of Canva’s suggested prompts.

After checking online, I found sure enough that Canva was having connectivity issues with specific apps and had temporarily disabled them while they worked on a solution. The commotion was probably caused by the hordes of enthusiastic users who were keen to try out some tricks of their own.

What else can you do with Canva?

Canva is a compelling tool because it can help you do so much. For example, you can enhance images in dozens of ways – create creative crops, add a range of effects and animations, add text, add fun frames and borders, and convert to and from a variety of formats such as HEIC, PNG, JPG, WEBP, SVG and PDF. With Magic, you can erase, move, or add any objects to your photos, create custom faces with the AI Face Generator, expand edges, or change the aspect ratio of photos. Magic Media uses your words to turn your thoughts into photos and videos.

Canva also helps you create videos. Magic Design lets you turn still photos and clips into short, shareable videos. Magic Design for Video suggests appropriate stock music, and even manually (or automatically with a Pro subscription) syncs the tempo to the frames.

For your writing and copywriting, Magic Write helps you craft effective copy by creating on-brand text based on your prompts and checks for errors. Then, choose from a great selection of fonts and add creative styles to create your design, or use a template to get there faster.

I have a few quibbles about this tool, many of which go unnoticed until you have something specific in mind that you want to do and suddenly realize you can’t do it. For example, you can add a drop shadow to text but not shapes.

Safety and accessibility in Canva

Canva takes safe and ethical AI seriously with Canva Shield. Safety, privacy, and security controls help make sure you, your team, and your data are protected.

If you’re a creator, Canva will also cover you through its Creator Compensation Program, which stipulates that the company will pay $200 million in content and AI royalties to members of its creator community over the next three years if they authorize their content. To train AI in Canva.

Finally, Canva helps you build accessibility into your designs with an AI-powered alt text (alt text) builder that guides users with cognitive or visual disabilities to understand the content and function of your image.

All of the Magic Studio features are an amazing addition to Canva. It’s this alchemy of cutting-edge, useful tools accessible to everyone — and its attention to security, privacy, and fair compensation — that makes Canva such a wizard in the world of digital design. As such, it’s an Editors’ Choice award winner for anyone who needs to create graphics for their business, organization, or personal brand.
