California man dies when lumber passes through truck: reports

Family members are speaking out after their loved one was killed in what they described as a “freak accident” involving a lumber truck earlier this month.


The 23-year-old man was driving a box truck on Interstate 118 in Chatsworth on the morning of Jan. 8 when his car collided with a lumber truck in front of him, the California Highway Patrol said. Los Angeles Times and CW affiliate KTLA.


A piece of wood from the lumber truck struck the truck driver, who died from the collision, FOX affiliate KTTV reported.


Melissa Silva said her son, Manny Camacho, died from blunt force trauma to his torso, according to KTTV. As of Monday, the cause of the crash remained under investigation by the California Highway Patrol, which PEOPLE has contacted for additional information.


Camacho’s uncle, Mark Martinez, deemed his nephew a safe driver.


“We completely understand that it was a freak accident, but we believe it was an accident that should have been avoided considering how safe it was,” Martinez told KTTV.




The family said Camacho recently graduated from Azusa Pacific University, according to KTTV.


He was also a state champion in football, wrestling and track in high school, where he earned a GPA above 4.0.

“The hardest thing is waking up every day, and as soon as I open my eyes, it’s not a dream. It’s my new reality,” Silva told the station.


As of publication date Wednesday afternoon, more than $15,000 had been raised via GoFundMe to help Camacho’s family in the wake of his sudden death.




In a campaign update shared on Sunday, Silva thanked everyone who has shown their support over the past few days.


“As the days went by, I realized what a wonderful friend he was to so many,” she said of her eldest son.


Authorities said the speed of the box truck may have been a factor in the January 8 accident, according to the British newspaper “Daily Mail”. times. The driver of the timber truck was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries.
