ASHEVILLE — Long known as the deadliest area in the state for pedestrians, Asheville may not actually be the deadliest, a new study shows.

North Carolina Department of Transportation data for 2010-2018 is often cited as showing that the Asheville area ranked first in the state in terms of pedestrians killed in car accidents per capita. But a new study using National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data casts doubt on this questionable distinction.

The study looked at fatal car crashes in the NHTS from 2017 to 2021, analyzed counties that recorded at least 10 car crash fatalities over the five-year period and identified counties with the highest rates of pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes, according to a news release from Attorneys for Laborde-Earls, who conducted the study, was infected.
