An apparent technology bus accident damaged multiple cars on Castro Street

An accident occurred Monday morning with what appeared to be a tech bus crushing at least four cars on Castro Street near 20th Street, and photos and videos began to appear on social media.

San Francisco has largely gotten over its outside hostility toward technology buses, but a handful of people parked on Castro Street Monday morning have a new reason to resent the technology shuttles. A post on Reddit on Monday morning asking, “Why did police close down Castro Street?” Several commenters brought in saying things along the lines of “the tech bus is rolling down the hill backwards into a bunch of traffic.” KPIX confirmed that a commuter bus struck several vehicles in the Castro between 20th and 21st Streets, adding that at least one person was injured.

One person posted a video below saying: “The Google bus lost power while going up a hill and then backed out and hit 9 cars this morning outside my house.” We can’t confirm that the passenger bus had anything to do with Google, and KPIX says “at least four vehicles” suffered significant damage in the incident.

“Police received a 911 report of a bus sliding down the hill and striking several vehicles when the brakes failed,” a citizen post said Monday morning from 8:49 a.m. This appears to be consistent with KPIX’s report that “the collisions occurred at approximately 8:45 a.m.”

The SFMTA acknowledged that the “non-mono collision at Castro/20” had caused some disruptions along the 24 bus routes in that neighborhood. Although the agency tweeted at 12:20 p.m. that Line 24 was in place Full normal service has resumed.

KPIX reports one person was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries. That station also notes that “it appears that the bus may have flipped backwards down the steep hill and struck several cars,” although police have not yet commented on any possible cause of the accident.

If you have any information about this incident, you are asked to call the SFPD tip line at (415) 575-4444, or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with “SFPD.”
