FORT MADISON – An accident early Wednesday evening sent a man to a regional hospital.
First responders were dispatched to the intersection of 15th Street and M Street at approximately 6:45 p.m. looking for a bicyclist who had been struck by a dark-colored Ford SUV.
According to witnesses, the SUV was traveling westbound and they believe the vehicle struck the bicyclist who was traveling through the intersection. One witness said the sun may have been a factor in the vision.
Area residents provided first aid to the scene, including applying a tourniquet to stop blood loss.
AirEvac was called to the scene and landed in the street between the intersection and the rail yard. Lee County EMS crews treated the man at the scene and then he was transferred on a stretcher to the helicopter where he was airlifted to a regional hospital.
The man was riding a bike and pulling a bike trailer with equipment inside. Police cordoned off the intersection following the accident and the investigation is still under investigation.
Fort Madison Police, Lee County EMS, Fort Madison Fire & Rescue, and AirEvac responded to the incident.
