Olivia Corbiere remains hospitalized with serious injuries, her family said

A 23-year-old woman is in hospital fighting for her life after falling into a ravine during a ski trip in Bulgaria.

Olivia Corbiere, from Aston near Sheffield, suffered serious injuries, including a brain haemorrhage and lung damage, in the accident on Sunday.

According to her mother, Linzi Corbiere, Olivia had to be placed in an artificial coma and needed brain surgery.

She said her daughter, an experienced skater, is “lucky to be alive.”

Ms Corbiere, 46, said Olivia had just celebrated her birthday before traveling to Bankso, in southwestern Bulgaria, with friends and her sister Phoebe, 19.

On Sunday, the group was out sledding when Olivia went off the sledding trail and fell 20 feet (6 metres) into a ravine.

Phoebe told BBC Radio that emergency services in Sheffield were called as people gathered to try to help her sister, who was unconscious in the water.

“Random strangers jumped in,” Phoebe recalls.

“This was freezing water, and everyone was taking off their jackets and putting them under and over Olivia to try to keep that bit of warmth.”

A fundraiser has been set up to support Olivia during her recovery

Within minutes, mountain rescue teams arrived and Olivia was taken to a nearby hospital before being transferred to a hospital in Sofia, the capital of Bulgaria.

“At that moment it was pure shock, you really can’t believe this is happening,” Phoebe said.

“This is still a huge shock factor for all of us right now.”

Ms Corbiere and her husband Seb, 51, flew out as quickly as they could and have been staying in a nearby hotel since.

Ms Corbiere said her daughter’s injuries included severe head trauma, a fractured eye socket, a fractured pelvis and three fractured vertebrae.

“If Olivia had not been wearing a helmet, she would be dead now,” Ms Corbiere said.

“How her neck wasn’t broken, we don’t know.”

On Tuesday, Olivia underwent brain surgery, but Ms Corbiere said any further procedures would take place in the UK once she was flown back.

A fundraiser has been set up to support Olivia, a kitchen designer, during her recovery and while she is unable to work.

So far, more than £23,000 has been raised.

“We don’t know what her long-term prognosis is,” Ms. Corbiere said.

“Fundraising will help a lot.”
