A “joyful and sweet” Texas boy was killed in a swing accident during a family celebration

Liberty County, Texas – A 9-year-old boy, described as “cheerful and sweet”, was killed after a homemade swing-like structure flipped over and hit him in the head.

Pedro Angel Gonzalez was playing with other children in the backyard of a home in Plum Grove, about an hour northeast of Houston, Texas, last Saturday.

They were all celebrating birthdays together.

The A-frame chassis had a motor winch attached. Deputies said the children were swinging from a chain attached to it. Angel was pushing a boy on a swing when family members said the structure flipped over and hit him in the head as he tried to move out of the way.

“My little cousin was a very happy little baby,” Gonzalez told us. She rushed to perform CPR on Angel after the accident, which occurred along CR 5263B south of the Plum Grove community.

It took first responders about 40 minutes to get there, Gonzalez said.

“I feel like the help we received that day was overdue in terms of EMS and getting help from them, so I really hope this tragedy brings awareness to that,” Gonzalez said.

Deputies said there is no active criminal investigation. They view it as a tragic accident.

The uncle who lives in the residence told KPRC 2 that the swing set was bolted to the floor and that he installed it a few weeks ago.

The CDC reports that each year more than 200,000 children go to U.S. hospital emergency rooms due to injuries related to playground equipment.

The CDC warns that although playgrounds are great places for children to play and explore risks and boundaries, they can put children at risk of infection as well. On the playground, the use of certain types of equipment such as monkey bars, climbing equipment and swings is more likely to cause concussions and other brain injuries.

For a safe and fun playing experience, look for playgrounds that have:

  • Equipment appropriate for the child’s age.

  • Soft materials underneath equipment, such as wood chips, sand, or mulch.

  • Handrails to help prevent falls.

Look for objects in the play area that might cause children to trip, such as logs or rocks.
